A characterization of the current state of AI agent deployment, describing a phase in which agents operate in isolation rather than in coordinated, multi-agent systems.

Overview

The term captures the observation that, as of the time of the talk, agent infrastructure and tooling has matured primarily around single, standalone agents completing tasks independently. As stated in Inside YC's AI Playbook, "it feels like we're still kind of in the single player era of agents" (12:14).

Contrast with Multiplayer Systems

The concept is defined largely in contrast to what comes next: the Multiplayer Harness, which represents the unsolved coordination layer needed for agents to work together. The same talk identifies "one of the big problems that I don't think has been solved well yet by anybody is the multiplayer harness" (12:26) — implying that moving beyond the single-player era requires infrastructure that does not yet exist in a satisfactory form.

The framing suggests a developmental arc analogous to gaming or software paradigms, where single-player competence is a prerequisite before multi-agent, collaborative, or competitive dynamics become tractable.
